This lesson was on fear. We talked about how there were many new ideas –to the students- and how they would be more aware now of news about persecution. We explored what God says in the Bible about fear.
ISIS propaganda is using and selling fear.
This lesson was a little difficult to put together, we went back and forth on how deeply we should discuss ISIS. My mom was concerned about how we presented such sensitive images. We prayerfully decided to not show any ISIS videos. Instead, we used a brief news clip that broke down the different ways the video of ISIS beheading the 21 Christians on the beach was manipulated. We talked about the how and why they did that.
We analyzed how the video ISIS released of the beheading of the 21 Christians was manipulated, that ISIS members are really not nine feet tall, that they were not on a beach but were using CGI effects to project power and build fear.
We read this article from American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ)
There was a theory that went around how the Christians were calm and didn’t panic because they had been through many mock executions. Some Christians said, no that they knew they were going to see Jesus in a minute. The 21 Christians last words were, “Lord, Jesus Christ”.
We discussed how God tells us over and over in His word not to fear.
Fear is a lie from the enemy.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and request. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.”
We closed the class by watching music video by Selah, The People of the Cross:
This was the morning of the attack in Paris.
